Green and White Field: Taking Care of Our Home

By the Green and White Youth Association · · 3 min read

To the players, Green and White Field is simply where they practice and play. To the volunteers who care for it, it is a never-ending project. Keeping a community field safe, playable and welcoming takes a surprising amount of work, from mowing and lining to repairs, cleaning and planning for the future. Here is a look at what goes into taking care of our home.

The basics

Mowing and turf care

Grass needs regular mowing, especially during the growing season. A well-maintained playing surface is safer for players, reducing the risk of trips and falls. Turf care also includes filling holes, reseeding worn areas and managing weeds.

Lining the field

Before games, the field needs to be lined with chalk or paint, including yard lines, hash marks and boundaries. Lining a field correctly takes time and care, and it needs to be done regularly as lines fade.

Drainage

Poor drainage can leave fields muddy and unsafe after rain. Addressing drainage problems can be a big project, but it makes a field usable for more of the season.

Facilities

Beyond the playing surface, a field includes facilities that need attention:

  • Bleachers, which need inspection and repairs to stay safe.
  • Lights, which need maintenance and electricity.
  • Concession stands, which need cleaning, equipment and supplies.
  • Restrooms, which need regular cleaning and upkeep.
  • Storage for equipment.
  • Fencing and gates.

Work days

Much of this work happens on volunteer work days. Parents, coaches, players and community members come together to clean, paint, repair and prepare the field for the season. Work days are a great way to get involved, meet other families and see the impact of your efforts right away.

Our association has held work days to prepare the field and building, and they always remind us how much can be accomplished when people pitch in.

The cost

Maintaining a field is expensive. Equipment, fuel, seed, paint, chalk, electricity and repairs all add up. For a volunteer-run program, these costs come from registration fees, fundraising and donations. Unexpected repairs, such as replacing a damaged section of fence or fixing lights, can strain the budget.

Planning for the future

Good field care also means planning ahead. Long-term projects, such as improving drainage, upgrading lights or renovating facilities, require planning and fundraising over several years. Having a plan helps programs prioritize and make steady progress.

How you can help

  • Volunteer at a work day.
  • Offer professional skills, such as landscaping, electrical work or carpentry.
  • Donate supplies or equipment.
  • Make a gift designated for field and facilities.
  • Respect the field by cleaning up after games and following rules.

A source of pride

A well-kept field is a source of pride for players, families and the whole community. It shows that people care about the children who play there. Every time a team takes the field on a freshly lined surface under bright lights, it is thanks to the hard work of volunteers and the generosity of supporters.

Help another child suit up this season

Registration fees, helmets, cheer uniforms, field lights and insurance all cost money. Your gift keeps fees low and makes sure no child in our community sits out because of cost.
