Questions families ask
Straight answers about registration, costs, equipment, safety and how our volunteer-run association works.
Who can join your programs?
Our programs are open to children who live in Pen Argyl and the surrounding Slate Belt communities. Players are grouped by age so that they compete against children at a similar stage of development. Exact age ranges for each sport and division are confirmed at registration each season, and we are happy to help you figure out where your child fits.
When is registration?
Football and cheer sign-ups are held in the spring, typically in May, ahead of the fall season. Softball registration is announced before its spring season. Dates and times are posted on our Facebook page and shared at our monthly meetings. If you miss the main sign-up day, contact us, because late registration is sometimes possible when space allows.
How much does it cost?
Registration fees are set each year by the board and cover insurance, league dues, officials, uniforms and equipment. We fundraise throughout the year to keep fees as low as we can. If cost is a barrier for your family, please contact us privately. Donors to our Player Scholarship Fund help make sure no child is turned away.
My child has never played before. Is that okay?
Absolutely. Most of our players start with little or no experience. Coaches begin every season with the fundamentals and are used to teaching beginners. The most important thing a new player can bring is a willingness to listen and try.
What equipment do I need to buy?
It depends on the sport. Football players usually need their own cleats, a mouthguard and athletic supporter or compression gear, while helmets and pads are typically provided and fitted by the association. Cheerleaders need appropriate athletic shoes and may purchase some uniform items. Softball players need a glove that fits and, often, a batting helmet and bat. You will receive a full list at registration.
How do you handle safety and concussions?
Safety comes first. Our coaches are expected to complete concussion awareness training, teach proper technique and remove any player who shows signs of a head injury. A player who is removed for a suspected concussion does not return to play until cleared by a licensed medical professional. Volunteers who work with children are required to hold Pennsylvania clearances.
Can parents watch practices?
Yes. Parents are welcome at practices and games. We ask that you watch from the designated spectator areas and leave the coaching to the coaches during practice, so players hear one clear voice. If you have a concern, speak with your child’s coach privately afterward or contact the program coordinator.
How can I volunteer or coach?
We are always looking for help. Coaches, assistant coaches, game-day workers, concession volunteers and event helpers are all needed. Visit our Get Involved page or come to a monthly meeting on the first Wednesday of any month. We will explain which clearances your role requires and help you through the process.
Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes. Green and White Youth Association, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public charity, EIN 23-2270974. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You will receive a written acknowledgment of your gift for your records.
How are decisions made in the association?
The association is governed by an elected volunteer board according to its bylaws, with coordinators who oversee each sport. The board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the GWYA building, and those meetings are open to the public. Anyone interested in how the association is run is welcome to attend.
What happens if a game is cancelled for weather?
Weather decisions are made as early as possible and are posted on our Facebook page. Coaches will also contact their teams directly. Lightning means everyone leaves the field immediately, and play does not resume until at least 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard.
Can my business sponsor a team?
Yes, and we would be grateful. Sponsorships help keep registration affordable and are recognized on banners, team apparel or event materials depending on the level. Visit the Get Involved page or contact us to talk about options that suit your business.
Still have a question?
If you did not find what you were looking for, please send us a message or call (610) 721-8125. You can also come to our open meeting on the first Wednesday of any month and ask in person.
Help another child suit up this season
Registration fees, helmets, cheer uniforms, field lights and insurance all cost money. Your gift keeps fees low and makes sure no child in our community sits out because of cost.
