What a Youth Sports Board Member Actually Does

By the Green and White Youth Association · · 3 min read

Every volunteer-run youth sports program depends on a board of directors. Board members make decisions about finances, policies, programs and the overall direction of the organization. If you have ever wondered what serving on a youth sports board involves, here is an overview.

The role of the board

A nonprofit board is responsible for governing the organization. In a youth sports association, that typically includes:

  • Setting the organization's direction and priorities.
  • Approving budgets and overseeing finances.
  • Establishing policies, such as codes of conduct and safety rules.
  • Making sure the organization follows its bylaws and the law.
  • Overseeing programs and the coordinators who run them.
  • Representing the organization in the community.

Officer roles

Most boards include officers with specific responsibilities:

  • President: leads meetings, guides the board and represents the organization.
  • Vice president: supports the president and steps in when needed.
  • Secretary: keeps records, takes minutes and manages correspondence.
  • Treasurer: manages finances, tracks income and expenses and prepares financial reports.

Many youth sports boards also include coordinators for each sport, who manage day-to-day operations of their programs.

Time commitment

Board service requires time. Board members typically attend monthly meetings, participate in events and help with various tasks throughout the year. Busy seasons, such as registration and the start of a season, often require more time. Officers and coordinators may spend several hours a week on association work during peak periods.

Skills that help

Board members come from all walks of life. Helpful skills include:

  • Organization and communication.
  • Financial management or bookkeeping.
  • Event planning and fundraising.
  • Experience in youth sports or education.
  • Professional skills such as legal, marketing or facilities management.

Most important, board members need a genuine commitment to the children the organization serves and a willingness to work collaboratively.

Responsibilities as a nonprofit leader

Board members of a 501(c)(3) organization have legal and ethical responsibilities. They must act in the best interest of the organization, avoid conflicts of interest and ensure that funds are used properly. They also oversee required filings, such as annual reports to the Internal Revenue Service.

The rewards

Board service can be demanding, but it is also deeply rewarding. Board members see the direct impact of their work on children and families. They build relationships with other community members, develop leadership skills and help shape the future of an organization that matters.

How to get involved

If you are interested in board service, start by attending a few meetings. Learn how the organization works, get to know current board members and volunteer for committees or events. Elections or appointments typically happen according to the organization's bylaws, and current board members can explain the process.

A vital role

Without volunteer board members, community youth sports programs could not exist. Serving on a board is one of the most impactful ways to support children in your community. If you have the time and interest, consider stepping up. The children you serve will benefit for years to come.

Help another child suit up this season

Registration fees, helmets, cheer uniforms, field lights and insurance all cost money. Your gift keeps fees low and makes sure no child in our community sits out because of cost.
