Giving Tuesday, Year-End Giving and Local Nonprofits

By the Green and White Youth Association · · 3 min read

The last weeks of the year are the busiest giving season for nonprofits. Giving Tuesday, held each year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, kicks off a period when many people make charitable donations, often motivated by the holiday spirit and the approach of the tax year's end. For small, local nonprofits, this season can make a significant difference.

What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday began in 2012 as a response to the shopping-focused days that follow Thanksgiving, such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It encourages people to give to causes they care about. Since then, it has grown into a global movement, with millions of people participating every year.

Why year-end giving matters

Many nonprofits receive a large share of their annual donations in the last few weeks of the year. For volunteer-run organizations, year-end gifts can help fund the coming year's programs, equipment and scholarships.

Why give locally

National charities do important work, but local nonprofits have unique advantages:

  • You can see the impact of your gift in your own community.
  • Your donation often makes a bigger difference to a small organization.
  • Local nonprofits are run by people you may know, such as your neighbors.
  • Supporting local organizations strengthens your community.

Making your gift count

Choose carefully

Research organizations before you give. Look for nonprofits that are transparent about their finances and clear about how they use donations. Tax-exempt organizations' annual filings are publicly available through resources such as the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search.

Designate your gift

If you want your gift used for a specific purpose, such as a scholarship fund or equipment, let the organization know. Many nonprofits allow donors to designate gifts.

Consider monthly giving

A year-end gift is valuable, but a recurring monthly gift provides steady support throughout the year. Consider starting a monthly gift as part of your year-end giving.

Check for matching

Many employers match charitable gifts. Check whether your employer has a program, and submit a request before the deadline.

Keep records

For tax purposes, keep records of your donations, including written acknowledgments from the nonprofit for gifts of two hundred fifty dollars or more. Consult a tax professional about how charitable gifts affect your taxes.

Other ways to give

Giving does not have to be financial. Volunteering, sharing a nonprofit's message on social media or encouraging friends and family to give are all ways to support causes you care about.

Supporting youth sports this season

If youth sports in Pen Argyl and the Slate Belt matter to you, consider making the Green and White Youth Association part of your year-end giving. Your gift helps keep registration affordable, equipment safe and fields ready for the next generation of players. Green and White Youth Association, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public charity, EIN 23-2270974, and gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Thank you for considering us, and happy holidays from all of our volunteers, players and families.

Help another child suit up this season

Registration fees, helmets, cheer uniforms, field lights and insurance all cost money. Your gift keeps fees low and makes sure no child in our community sits out because of cost.
